In a first focal plane scope the reticle sits ahead of the magnification lens group, so it grows and shrinks in exact proportion with the target image. The practical consequence is the whole point: every subtension on the reticle means the same angular amount at every magnification. A mark that covers 1 mil at 20x still covers 1 mil at 6x. You can range, hold elevation and hold wind at whatever power the conditions allow rather than the one power the manufacturer calibrated.

That matters most when you are working a target at unknown distance, correcting between shots, or shooting a stage under time. It matters much less if you zero once, hold dead-on inside 250 yards, and never touch the turrets — which is why FFP is close to universal in PRS and increasingly common in Western hunting, and still a minority choice on a treestand rifle.

The honest costs are two. At the bottom of the magnification range an FFP reticle can shrink to the point of being hard to see against dark backgrounds, which is why illumination is far more common on FFP scopes and worth budgeting for. And FFP glass generally costs more than comparable SFP glass, because the reticle has to be etched finely enough to stay usable at maximum power without disappearing at minimum. Buy FFP because you will use the reticle as a measuring instrument, not because it is the more advanced-sounding option.
