A competition-oriented precision scope is bought on tracking first and glass second. If you dial 5 mils of elevation the reticle must move exactly 5 mils, and it must come back to zero when you dial down — repeatably, over a full revolution, all day. Verify it yourself with a tall target test rather than trusting the box: dial a known amount against a plumb line at a measured distance and confirm the group moved exactly that far. A box test proves return-to-zero but will not catch proportional tracking error, which is the failure mode that compounds at 600 yards and beyond.

Usable elevation above your zero is the specification that decides whether the scope can reach. Total travel on the spec sheet is not what you get, because zeroing consumes some of it and manufacturing tolerance consumes more.
